BUFFALO’S SIDEWALK MARKERS
One of my favorite things about living on Buffalo’s West Side is the number of sidewalk markers you see on our streets and sidewalks. I know that sounds mundane, but in Buffalo, NY our sidewalk markers are anything but! Around every corner you’ll find these decorative bronze imprints giving spirit and character to our communities.
Over the last year, I’ve taken numerous neighborhood walks not only looking up but, yes, also looking down at the pavement. Walking is one thing I do to keep centered, and I always keep an eye out for new, undiscovered sidewalk markers. The markers convey the rich history of our city, reminding us that even pouring pavement is a lost art.
And, as a historian at heart, I’m always sure to take my trusty iphone along to record my findings. Check out this awesome gallery – you can click on each image to enlarge in a lightbox.
According to Preservationist John Maxfield Hague, there were at least thirty-seven sidewalk companies who used the plates, most dating from 1885-1920. Some, like Crescent Paving Company are found repeatedly, while others are rare and you may only find one in the whole city. Many markers have likely been lost with time due to Buffalo’s harsh winters, ill-advised urban renewal, and theft. To my knowledge, a full survey of these hidden landmarks has yet to be taken.
